Clifton Suspension Bridge

Bristol

Attractions Free Things To Do

A 'must see' for visitors to Bristol. This impressive150 year old Suspension Bridge provides spectacular views over the Avon Gorge. In the evenings the illuminated bridge provides an impressive sight especially when observed from a distance - the lights are switched off at midnight to conserve electricity. Opened in 1864 the design of the bridge is attributed to the famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who unfortunately died in 1859 before work on the bridge was completed.

TOP TIP: This is a great place to view the mass ascent of hot air balloons during the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta.

The Bridge is always open and there is a Visitor Centre at the Leigh Woods side of the bridge that is open from 10am-5pm.

Pedestrians and cyclists do not have to pay to cross the bridge but there is a small charge for cars.

Free guided tours for individuals and small family groups are available every weekend and on Bank Holiday Mondays, from Easter Saturday until the end of October. The hour long tour starts at 3pm from the Clifton side of the bridge (by the tollbooth). Large groups must book a separate tour - see the website for details.
