About The Four Seasons
Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is the most recorded work in classical music and a defining solo violin showpiece. Each concerto in the set depicts a different season, shaped by poems possibly written by Vivaldi and inspired by the seasonal landscapes painted by Marco Ricci. The music vividly evokes natural sounds such as birdsong, buzzing flies, harvest celebrations, drunken revellers, barking dogs, summer storms, and winter ice.
The Lark Ascending
Composed just before the First World War, Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending offers a reflective, pastoral perspective. Inspired by George Meredith’s poem, it captures a world on the brink of change, with a soaring violin line that suggests a lark gliding high above the mechanised world below, “lost on his aerial rings / In light, and then the fancy sings.”
Mozart Highlights
Mozart features twice in the programme: with the energetic Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, followed by his Flute Quartet in D. The quartet, written for a wealthy amateur flautist, highlights the flute throughout, starting with a bright tuneful opening, a slow expressive middle movement, and a playful, quick finale.
